Tor, leave it to another app to cause user goals, anxiety and the comparison trap. The best part is that it has sparked in you another winning idea. Your doggie angst illo made me laugh out loud!
I love pen and ink and pencil and faff too much over which one to use. Go with whatever feels good today. Repeat tomorrow!
As for popcorn trickery, I’ll never eat it again without thinking of your comic!
I know!! And I felt like I was tricked into using this app against my will!
Thanks Maggie - yes you're right, I always think I've found "The Tool" which will solve all art-making woes but of course that's always subject to change!
Loving the pen, Tor!! Your competitive dog ownership made me laugh. Imagine if every step counter had competition involved. It’s bad enough knowing I didn’t even get to 10k in a day, without knowing my neighbour hit 20k! Although…would be good motivation!
The popcorn trick. Gross!! I love your colour in that one! Feels very retro horror! Xx
I remember the popcorn trick from Mickey Rourke in Diner! I had my doubts even as a teenager - surely if you make a hole in the bottom of the carton the popcorn starts to tumble out? I guess you have to be ready to stem the flow with the, er, ‘bung’.
I do remember thinking it didn’t seem like a good way to get invited on a second date; but I was quite conventional.
Great comics as ever, Tor - are you doing pencils then pen? Or straight to pen?
I have never seen Diner!!! Do you recommend, even if just for that bit? You made me laugh about being quite conventional, and the bung. In America also they smother popcorn with hot melted butter, so perhaps the bunger gets his just desserts in the end.
I'm doing pencil roughs then lightboxing into pen. Is that how you go too?
I think Diner was very much 'of its time', as they say - a lot of it would feel quite old-fashioned now. But, you know; Rourke, Bacon, Gutenberg, Reiser, Stern, Barkin - an early 80s cornucopia of talent; for afficionados of the era there's a lot to love. It was very much indebted to American Graffiti, which I still adore, and would recommend over Diner.
If I'm feeling brave I will just go straight to pen; but because I do all the drawing and speech bubbles on scraps of paper and add the frames in Photoshop I have quite a lot of flexibility with composing the panels in 'post'. This always feels like a bit of a cheat, but I can't imagine any other way - what if I laid out a whole page and then realised I wanted to add in a frame!? I do do pencil thumbnails for framing and to work out the pacing, and for complicated poses/compositions. And I use paper thin enough that I don't need a lightbox.
Thank you for this line! My partner asks me lots of inane questions like : Why did you wash all the dishes but this one cup? Why did you leave this plastic bowl in the middle of the living room? Why did you put wet lettuce straight on the counter? Why did you put an empty yoghurt container back in the fridge?
From now on, I will just say "Oh, I just thought I would". That will shut him up.
Oh chill out, Biscuit! This was a delight xx

Wayne’s World is a rich seam for quotes!
It really is!! I was rewatching the Psycho Hose Beast gun rack bit the other day 😂
