Last Saturday Bruce Springsteen played his second night in London, at Hyde Park. When tickets were released last year, despite it being a date long marked in my calendar, I failed to get any due to sleeping in with a hangover. As concert day approached, I increasingly felt I wouldn’t be able to stand missing him - so I bought an expensive return, telling myself that I’d saved that money and more in now just over eleven months of teetotal-dom.
Setting off on the bus, I had a wave of pure excitement, such as come along so rarely these days. That feeling now has such a strong association with drinking for me that I came closer than any other time in the last eleven months - but at the tipping point at the pub beforehand, I went the right way for me, and experienced my first sober gig in a long time.
There are some notable pros to not drinking alcohol at a big gig:
Particularly enjoyed the drawing of you with a million cigarettes, and also the sadly ever-so-recognisable Portaloo moment <3
Hurray! Nice one on the eleven months. Its hardest when it would be so easy. A while back you did a comic about you did a comic about booze, changing your relationship with it etc... it was really inspiring... honest, balanced, light, funny, sincere but not mawkishly finger waggy or doom laden... oh man lots of words there but yeah it was GREAT. I'm sure I could find it by scrolling back through the insta but if you fancied posting it here again then that would be super. Or you could just tell me to not be such a lazy bastard and scroll down insta a bit haha. WHATEVER, it was GOOD. Best to ya!
