Since getting Rusty I have thought often of this cartoon by Gary Larson (the GOAT, naturally!):
I am currently parted from my GL books, but I think I can remember that in The Prehistory of the Far Side, this is one of the cartoons Gary Larson talks about; how he worked to get the dog’s expression just so. And he really did - this face is enigma writ canine!
I think about it a lot because Rusty looks a little like this dog, and also because he’s so inscrutable to me. I’m sure that’s true of many dogs to their owners, but I’ve never had a dog before, and Rusty’s early life is shrouded in mystery, which I think adds to his unreadableness sometimes. What past is he pondering when he’s being withholding?? Do I wish he could talk - or would it be like when opera is translated and subtitled, and you wish you’d never known what they were saying in the first place?
This all leads me to:
I genuinely can’t remember what Mum was saying that necessitated using this noise, but I think it might have been the state of the economy. No more conversations about politics in this house!
Your Rusty comics never fail to lift my spirits xx
Loved this so much! I bribe/distract Babsy with what I call her 'Chantilly Kong'. It's a blue Kong and I bought this squirty meat sauce stuff in a can like squirty cream, aimed at chumps like me who will pay 12 euro for this kind of thing. Thank you for your wonderful words and comics.
