Hello friends! October went by fast - and I was in Frankfurt for the last five days, for a children’s comics concert put on by the Yippie! children’s comics festival. It was great to meet in person some new friends I had only had email contact with, and get a little more of a sense of the children’s comics scene in Germany.
The concert itself was a mix of songs, readings and drawing. Yippie! present comics in a way I’ve not seen done before, and which is really effective. Each panel is projected separately, large, on a screen and each character read (really acted!) by a different member of the team. It makes for a mix between an animation and comic, and is hilarious to watch. A different comic of mine was read on each of the two days - and I had a bit part in each, which I thoroughly mangled in horribly pronounced German. I had a lot of fun!
I first had contact with Jakob Hoffman and Ferdinand Lutz when they published a comic from Welcome to Oddleigh in the German children’s comics magazine that they co-founded, POLLE. I’ve had a comic in POLLE every issue since - it’s a wonderful magazine, so I feel lucky! I thought I’d share the second comic I made for them, for issue #3. The writing is a little messy as I only did final text in German. The theme of the issue was “Bread”, so here is my contribution!
Being the consummate photographer I never am, I haven’t any photos to show from my time in Frankfurt, but below are some personal bits of work from throughout the month.
Happy November, thank you for reading!
