Hello, my most august friends!
Despite paying lip-service to the benefits of keeping sketchbooks, I’ve been really hopeless at it over the years. I was put off by the notion of carrying one around. I was definitely put off by the substandard drawing I’d immediately make on a crisp new page.
But lo! I change, I grow. I start drawing in pen, which immediately cuts down on the smudginess of sketchbook attempts. I feel the need to stop spraying bits of A4 printer paper all over my room and life. Also, I’m trying to have lots of ideas for decorating the pots I’m making, and this is a nice place to keep everything.
Thinking in a 3D way has really been challenging me, and I’m absolutely at the beginning on this clay journey. Which drawings are disposable, and which ones are worthy of adorning an object which, if cared for with the respect it’s owed, will outlast us humans and be in a museum curated by aliens in the distant future??? Although, given I’ve broken two arms and a tail off the mermaid candleholders I’m making so far, perhaps that’s overly optimistic about the aliens.
Anyway, please find lots of images below and some clay decorating attempts. More to come soon I hope, although boy is the whole process glaccciiiiaaal. I put some unsuccessful pots on the wall outside our house with a sign saying “free please take” and then looked through the spyhole every ten minutes or so to see if they’d been snatched up. They did go in the end, but with a lag in time I FOUND DISPLEASING.
Sadly this guy lost one of his handles. It’ll break your heart, this pottery business!
Thanks for reading, until soon!
I’m going to be loitering by your wall ready to snatch up the next batch! 😂 looking forward to seeing more future alien treasure hoards…
I've loved your Substack to bits, i but now ( as if it were possible) I love it even more due to your sketchbook confession- I share your shame.
And like head-to-toe Seasalt, wild swimming and fermenting.... ceramics will come for us all eventually. I too have signed up. Thanks for the warning x
