I remembered a really good painting for my Behind the Paint series: Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights, painted between 1490 and 1510, when Bosch was between 40 and 60 years old - the guy was an enigma! I don’t know why I didn’t think of this painting before, as it has the ultimate cast of characters, and I’ve already done another comic about it.
There’s basically too much fodder in this painting, and I couldn’t decide how to approach it. I went for this help group-style thing…
And below is a comic I made about the painting in 2019. Bosch’s painting is a triptych on oak panels, and can fold in to shut. The exterior panels when closed show the world during creation, and the first page of my comic was based on that.
